On the French Riviera it is easy to find a gluten-free menu, and much harder to find a gluten-free kitchen. From Saint-Tropez to Monaco, Nutrixe has verified 35 places, and only 2 are fully dedicated kitchens. It is the exact opposite of Sardinia or Mallorca, and for coeliacs it changes how you eat.
Plenty of menus, very few dedicated kitchens
A “gluten-free menu” means several dishes are designed to be gluten free and are marked as such, often with real care. But the kitchen also handles wheat: the same pizza oven, the same crêpe griddles, a shared fryer, flour in the air. “Options” go less far: one adapted dish, a substitute base, sometimes only on request. Our article on dedicated kitchens versus gluten-free options explains what each level guarantees.
In practice, on this coast you will nearly always have the same conversation: say you have coeliac disease, ask how the dish is prepared, and decide whether to accept a residual risk. That is a personal decision. If you react to traces, talk to your gastroenterologist before you travel, and favour places that document their precautions.
Gluten-free restaurants in Nice: ten places, one dedicated
Nice has its own detailed guide. Remember three things. The only dedicated place is Amour Pâtisserie Végétale on Rue Foncet, a fully plant-based, gluten-free pâtisserie with a set lunch. The most reassuring restaurant is GiGi Tavola by the port, which says it uses two ovens, two workstations and dedicated utensils, and presents itself as the first restaurant in Nice listed by AFDIAG, the French coeliac association; its second branch, in Saint-Isidore, is an AFDIAG member. And the many crêperies in the old town are all shared kitchens.
Cannes and Antibes: crêperie country
Our guides to Cannes and Antibes cover each place in turn. None is dedicated. Of the twelve places in the two towns, four are crêperies, where buckwheat sits alongside wheat.
Two useful details. In Cannes, L’Atelier Artisan Crêpier, near the old port, marks its gluten-free galettes and, according to reviews, uses separate griddles; note that one of its fillings contains gluten. In Juan-les-Pins, La Crêperie on Avenue du Docteur-Dautheville is listed as “dedicated” by an online directory, wrongly: all its galettes are gluten free, but the kitchen is shared. That is exactly the kind of error we correct.
Monaco: one dedicated place and one certification
Our Monaco guide covers the principality’s eight places. The only dedicated kitchen is Seaside Juicery on Rue des Açores: fully plant-based, organic and gluten free, with cold-pressed juices, smoothie bowls and healthy takeaway dishes. Among the restaurants, Tre Scalini, a Roman trattoria in Fontvieille, holds AFDIAG certification and offers part of its pizza range gluten free, but its kitchen is shared. At the gelato shop CREA on Rue Princesse-Caroline, every gelato flavour is gluten free; ask for a cup rather than a cone.
The Var: Saint-Tropez, Grimaud, Fréjus
To the west there are three places, all shared kitchens. The most interesting is Le Sun, a beach restaurant at Les Prairies de la Mer in Port Grimaud: gluten-free dishes are marked on the menu, every pizza except the calzone comes gluten free, chips are cooked in a dedicated fryer, and the manager is coeliac himself. It is seasonal, open roughly from April to mid-October. In Saint-Tropez, the Crêperie Bretonne on Quai Frédéric-Mistral marks its buckwheat galettes with a gluten-free logo, and in Fréjus, the Crêperie de Gaëlle on the harbour makes gluten-free crêpes on request. In both, wheat flour is also used on site.
Around Cannes, two isolated places complete the picture: Pépite, a bistro on the port at La Napoule with a gluten-free menu but a shared fryer, and Le Poulpi Place, a fully plant-based café-restaurant in Grasse whose team understands cross-contamination.
Socca, pan bagnat, pissaladière
Niçoise cooking has one speciality with no wheat in the recipe: socca, a large thin pancake of chickpea flour, water, olive oil and salt, baked in the oven. Pan bagnat, on the other hand, is a filled bread roll, and pissaladière has a bread-dough base: both contain wheat.
Chickpea doesn’t mean risk-free. Socca counters often also make pissaladière and tarts with wheat flour. At Chez Pipo, a harbour institution since 1923, socca is cooked on its own tray, but it is the only gluten-free item on the menu and wheat flour is handled on site. In Antibes, Miss Socca makes its soccas and crêpes with organic chickpea flour and no wheat, but we flag a cross-contamination risk. Always ask what is cooked alongside.
Beyond the coast: the nearest dedicated places
If you want a kitchen with no wheat flour at all, you need to step outside the area. Towards Toulon, there are two dedicated bakeries: Mac & Choc in Six-Fours-les-Plages, a 100% gluten-free and dairy-free bakery that explicitly excludes oats, and Maison Folius in Carqueiranne, a plant-based, gluten-free pâtisserie facing the harbour. Just across the Italian border, Buon’ora Gluten Free in Bordighera is a fully gluten-free pizzeria and restaurant: lasagne, pasta, fried fish and pizza.
Our tips for the French Riviera
- Say “Je suis cœliaque” (I have coeliac disease), not “je mange sans gluten” (I eat gluten free). Careful kitchens hear the difference.
- Book and warn them in advance. Some restaurants, such as Le Séjour Café in Nice, only adapt dishes if you tell them 48 hours ahead.
- Look for written precautions: separate ovens, dedicated griddles, a dedicated fryer, the AFDIAG logo. Our article on cross-contamination helps you ask the right questions.
- Gelato: a cup, not a cone, unless the gluten-free cone comes individually wrapped. Our gluten-free gelato guide covers the pitfalls at the counter.
- For the rest of the country, our guide to gluten-free holidays in France lists the best-equipped regions.
In short
- 35 verified places from Saint-Tropez to Monaco, only 2 of them dedicated kitchens.
- Nice, Cannes, Antibes and Monaco each have their own detailed guide.
- Socca has no wheat in its recipe, but not necessarily none at its counter.
- The nearest 100% gluten-free places are towards Toulon and in Bordighera.
