What the principality has is Italy next door: three pizzerias make their menu gluten-free, an Italian in Larvotto goes as far as the tiramisu, an Italian ice cream shop has every flavour gluten-free. What the principality does not have is a kitchen without wheat flour. You announce your celiac disease everywhere, and you ask about the oven.

The pizzas, in three shared ovens

  • Tre Scalini, quai Jean-Charles Rey in Fontvieille, a Roman trattoria in the administrative district. A good part of the pizza menu exists in a gluten-free version — napoletana, capricciosa, vegetarian — also to take away and delivered within Monaco. It is the only address in town listed by AFDIAG, the French gluten intolerance association, in our database. The kitchen is still mixed: the standard pizzas are prepared and baked in the same place.
  • Apero Pizza Etc, allée Lazare Sauvaigo, an organic pizzeria that delivers throughout Monaco. Almost every pizza can be made on a gluten-free base, for €5 extra, and reviews from celiac customers are satisfied. The oven and the prep kitchen also handle the wheat doughs: state it clearly when ordering.
  • Miami Plage, a beach restaurant in Larvotto opened in 1975, Mediterranean cooking and wood-fired pizzas. The gluten-free dough is available for about €3.50 more, but it comes out of the same oven as the standard pizzas, and our sources describe no anti-contamination protocol. The least equipped of the three.

The Larvotto Italian, the sushi, the canteen

  • Avenue 31, avenue Princesse Grace facing Larvotto, a family Italian table. The gluten-free offer goes beyond a single dish: pasta, bread rolls served warm and tiramisu. Mixed kitchen, but feedback from celiac customers describes a manager who knows the subject. Speak up on arrival.
  • Planet Sushi, boulevard Albert 1er near the port: gluten-free dishes are flagged on the menu and on the website, with gluten-free soy sauce and gluten-free desserts. The kitchen is not dedicated and the fryer is shared: avoid tempura and gyoza, and give warning when ordering. Find Me Gluten Free advises calling ahead.
  • Woo Monaco, rue Princesse Caroline in La Condamine, an organic canteen open from morning to 6 pm on weekdays, eat in or take away: Buddha bowls, sandwiches, cold-pressed juices. The gluten-free offer extends to the patisserie — biscuits, cakes, bread, vegan carrot cake. The kitchen is not dedicated and works with flour: mention it when ordering.

The ice cream shop

CREA - Gelateria e cioccolateria, rue Princesse Caroline, the Monaco branch of a house present in Como, Lugano and the province of Cuneo. Every ice cream flavour is gluten-free, and the shop sells gluten-free biscuits and macarons. The staff know the subject: customers report a fresh tub opened and a spatula changed on request. The standard wafer cone is still wheat-based, so ask for a cup.

Our tips on site

  • Say “je suis cœliaque” (“I have celiac disease”), in French or in Italian, “sono celiaco”, which all these addresses understand: it is the word that triggers a separate preparation, where one exists.
  • Ask about the oven in a pizzeria: all three share theirs. A gluten-free base baked on the same stone as a wheat pizza remains a risk for a strict celiac, here is why.
  • Look out for the AFDIAG mention at Tre Scalini, and read what those certifications are worth: it is a listing, not a dedicated kitchen.
