Alicante is the seaside gateway to the Valencian Community — and a very pleasant surprise for coeliacs: 10 verified addresses, 8 of them entirely dedicated, with a valuable local edge: ACECOVA, the coeliac association of the Valencian Community, whose auditing and certification work stands behind several places on this list. After Valencia, the region confirms it’s one of the safest in Spain.
What the city offers
Gluten-free paella, finally worry-free
People come to Alicante for the rice, and that’s exactly where the city shines. Rice&Bones Bar (4.5★, over 1,000 reviews) is the first 100% gluten-free arrocería in the Valencian Community: every rice dish, naturally gluten-free, on a fully certified menu — backed by the Valencia coeliac association, the FACE protocol and an ELS certificate. In San Juan, Restaurante Orión (4.6★) serves paellas, fried dishes, croquettes and even adapted beer and pastries, with no wheat-based product anywhere on the menu. Eating a paella followed by croquettes without asking a single question — that’s exactly the kind of luxury this region offers coeliacs.
From five-star brunch to Neapolitan pizza
The recent standout is Donde Nakiss: opened in 2025 right in the city centre, this brunch-and-tapas spot designed entirely gluten-free boasts an improbable 5.0★ across more than 900 reviews — one of the best ratings in our entire database. On the Italian side, NONNA CELIA (4.7★), born from the La Taverna dell’Artista project in 2010, is now 100% gluten-free: fresh pasta, pizzas and desserts made daily in their own workshop. And Vegan Bombon Sin Gluten, an ACECOVA-certified bakery, combines vegan and gluten-free: croissants, brownies, cheesecakes, breads, pizzas — “a place where you don’t need to read the labels,” as their own motto puts it.
Something sweet: Italian gelato and a friends’ pastry shop
Cioccolato Puro d’Italia (4.6★, around 700 reviews) is an artisan Italian gelato-and-chocolate shop, 100% gluten-free, right in the heart of the city — dedicated gluten-free cones, vegan options, and not a trace of gluten in the workshop. Mia’s Snacks Sin Gluten (4.9★) was founded by two friends, one of whom is coeliac: an ACECOVA-certified pastry shop, entirely dedicated to desserts. And for evening bread, Ala Bin Bon PAN (4.8★) is a small, entirely gluten-free neighbourhood bakery — mind the hours, it’s only open late afternoon on weekdays.
Two addresses round out the list with a caveat: Gelateria Pinocchio (Calle Mayor) offers a clearly identified gluten-free menu (ice cream, waffles, crepes, pasta) within a classic Italian offering, and OZ gastroclub, an arrocería-cocktail bar audited by ACECOVA, still keeps bread and one wheat-based dessert for non-coeliac guests. Two good addresses for mixed-diet groups — coeliacs, just make yourself known.
Our tips on the ground
- The phrase to know: “Soy celíaco / celíaca, ¿es apto para celíacos?” — and the ACECOVA seal in a shop window is an excellent local signal.
- Rice is your ally: the arrocería is the restaurant format most naturally compatible with gluten-free eating in Spain — just check the broths and picadas, as always when eating out.
- Branch out across the region: Valencia is under two hours away — our Valencia guide picks up from here, and the Spain guide gives the bigger picture.
