Eating at a restaurant should be a pleasure, not a risk calculation. For someone with coeliac disease, though, it does take a few reflexes. With a bit of practice, they become second nature.
Favour kitchens that are entirely dedicated
The most useful distinction isn’t “does it offer gluten-free options?” but “does wheat ever enter the kitchen?”. In a 100% gluten-free establishment, contamination simply isn’t a question: there’s nothing to contaminate. You can order whatever you like without a second thought.
In a mixed kitchen, even a well-intentioned one, the risk is always there. That doesn’t rule it out, but it does call for a conversation.
100% gluten-free kitchen
Nothing to contaminate
- Wheat never enters the kitchen
- You order without a second thought
Mixed kitchen
The risk is always there
- Not a deal-breaker, but a conversation
- Preparation, fryer, flour: ask
The questions that actually matter
If the establishment isn’t fully dedicated, three questions are worth more than a long interrogation:
- Do you prepare gluten-free dishes separately? Clean utensils, a clean worktop and a clean pan make all the difference.
- Is your fryer shared? A fryer used for breaded products is enough to contaminate fries that would otherwise be gluten-free.
- Do you work with wheat flour on site? In a pizzeria or a mixed bakery, airborne flour settles everywhere.
The quality of the answers often tells you more than their content. A team that’s used to the question answers precisely and without irritation.
Watch out for false friends
Some dishes look safe and aren’t. Regular soy sauce contains wheat. Many sauces, stocks and simmered dishes are thickened with flour. “Gluten-free” beers made by de-glutenising barley don’t suit every person with coeliac disease. When in doubt, ask.
Call ahead when you can
For a place you don’t know, calling ahead saves a lot of disappointment. You confirm it’s open, that it can accommodate you, and you get an immediate sense of whether the team knows the subject.
What Nutrixe does for you upfront
Our job is precisely to take some of that burden off your shoulders. Every address is verified by hand, classified by its real level of gluten-free safety, and paired with the risk flags that matter. You arrive already knowing what to expect, and you keep these reflexes for the final stretch.
