Brooklyn has 12 verified addresses, 10 of them fully dedicated kitchens. That’s a fuller list than it looks, and surprisingly varied: a Japanese temaki bar, a Michelin-recognized soba restaurant, a birria taco truck, several bakeries, and two gluten-free menus in mixed kitchens worth approaching with the usual precautions.

Dedicated kitchens, from sushi to soba

Nami Nori, 236 North 12th Street in Williamsburg, is a 100% gluten-free temaki bar founded by chefs trained in high-end Japanese cooking, one of whom has celiac disease. The whole menu is gluten-free, hand rolls and tempura included — which settles the wheat-based soy sauce question in one go. Uzuki, in Greenpoint, goes further still: chef Shuichi Kotani prepares soba made of 100% buckwheat, not an ounce of wheat, unlike traditional Japanese soba which is often cut with wheat flour — the restaurant is Michelin-recognized.

Wild Park Slope, 148 5th Avenue, is presented by the house as the only 100% gluten-free Italian restaurant in Brooklyn: pizzas, pasta and an oyster bar, with happy hour and weekend brunch. Impact Kitchen, in Williamsburg, has served a 100% gluten-free, refined-sugar-free health food menu since 2015 — bowls, smoothies, gluten-free sourdough. And for a quick bite, Birria-Landia, a taco truck in Williamsburg, serves braised-beef tacos and tostadas exclusively on corn tortillas — the brand itself notes that its locations aren’t certified gluten-free kitchens, a cross-contamination risk worth keeping in mind.

The bakeries and the pastry shop

Sixteen Mill Bakeshop, 552 Union Street in Gowanus, is a 100% gluten-free and plant-based bakery: breads, buns, donuts, muffins and scones, with certified gluten-free organic flours. Everybody Eats, 294 3rd Ave, is a production bakery gluten-free, nut-free, soy-free and sesame-free, founded in 2004 by its owner, who is himself gluten intolerant — breads, cakes and seasonal pies. For raw sweets, Simply Sweet, in Sheepshead Bay, makes raw, vegan desserts — crepe cakes, raw chocolates — with no refined sugar or dairy.

Cafés and fast bites

Lively Brooklyn, a wellness café in Park Slope, serves an entirely gluten-free and mostly vegan menu: cold-pressed juices, smoothies, creative lattes. And TWENTYONEGRAINS, a fast-casual counter at DeKalb Market Hall, serves wraps, salads and bowls from an entirely gluten-free kitchen, founded by a restaurant professional who himself has celiac disease.

Gluten-free menus: worth the caution

Two addresses on our list operate mixed kitchens. Align Coffee/Crepe Master, a small café in Williamsburg, makes its crepe mix gluten-free, but also serves gluten-containing products in the same space: risk of cross-contamination and airborne flour. The Beer Garage, a sports bar in Park Slope, advertises a 100% gluten-free food menu (pizza, fried chicken, wings), but also pours regular beer on tap for other customers — watch out for shared taps.

Our tips on site

  • Say “I have celiac disease” rather than “I’m gluten-free”: the second phrase passes for a preference, the first triggers real precautions.
  • No questions to ask at the ten dedicated addresses: that’s what “dedicated kitchen” means, and here’s what it changes compared with a gluten-free menu in a mixed kitchen like Align Coffee or The Beer Garage.
  • Several neighbourhoods, several trips: Williamsburg and Greenpoint to the north, Gowanus and Park Slope in the middle, Sheepshead Bay to the south. Plan the journeys rather than trying to chain them together.
  • In the United States, two associations are the reference points: GIG (Gluten Intolerance Group), which runs a certification programme for establishments, and Beyond Celiac. Our guide to gluten-free travel in the USA covers the rest of the country.
