Barcelona is probably the easiest city in Europe to eat 100% gluten-free. Our database lists 32 verified addresses, 31 of them fully dedicated — places where wheat flour simply never enters the kitchen. And the variety is impressive: burgers, Neapolitan pizza, brunch, sushi, crepes, bakeries… all backed by one of Europe’s most active coeliac associations, the Associació Celíacs de Catalunya.

For context: Spain as a whole has 354 verified addresses in our database, 315 of them fully dedicated — the third-largest country in the world behind the United States and Italy. And Barcelona is its undisputed capital, ahead of Madrid (28 addresses), Valencia (18) and Seville (12). In a city you can cross on foot, this density genuinely changes the trip: you don’t “find” a gluten-free address, you choose between several — by neighbourhood, by craving, by budget.

The trend: entire chains going gluten-free

The clearest sign of Barcelona’s maturity: big-name chains have opened locations that are entirely gluten-free. Goiko Gluten Free — the well-known burger chain — converted its Passeig de Sant Joan restaurant to fully gluten-free (4.4★, nearly 11,000 reviews!). Same logic at Senza Glutine di Grosso Napoletano, the dedicated offshoot of the Neapolitan pizza chain, and at ARDEMOS, a 100% gluten-free burger joint rated 4.8★.

The restaurants that built the city’s reputation

Bloome By Sasha (4.8★) serves one of Europe’s most sought-after gluten-free brunches in the Barrio Gótico — eggs Benedict, pancakes, salmon toast. In the Raval, My Fucking Restaurant (the name says it all) and En Ville offer polished Mediterranean cooking, while Cal Màrius 449, an institution since 2014, is recognised by Catalonia’s coeliac association. More surprising still: ARUKU (4.7★) proves that a full Japanese menu — nigiri, ramen, fried chicken — can be 100% gluten-free. And PÖTSTOT ticks every box: gluten-free and vegan.

Bakeries: the densest cluster in our database

Ten dedicated bakeries in a single city — a record in our database, tied with restaurants. The pioneer: Jansana Gluten Free Bakery, fully converted since 2015 and certified by the Associació de Celíacs de Catalunya. The lab-bakery Gula Sana works with organic flours, and in the Born, Hanai Vegana (4.8★) pulls off the vegan-and-gluten-free double on doughnuts and pastries. For an unexpected taste of Brittany, Creperia Krampus works only with gluten-free flours.

And the “healthy” pizza everyone’s talking about

A category of its own: Pizza Natura, in the Eixample, whose millet-and-quinoa base is guaranteed free of wheat flour — 4.8★ and over 6,000 reviews, one of the highest-rated addresses in our entire European database.

Tips for your visit

  • The phrase to know: “Soy celíaco/celíaca, ¿es apto para celíacos?” — in Barcelona you can also say “sense gluten” (Catalan), but “sin gluten” is understood everywhere.
  • The Eixample has the highest concentration of addresses — it’s the neighbourhood to stay in if gluten-free eating is shaping your trip.
  • Look for certification from the Associació Celíacs de Catalunya (“Marca S”): Catalonia is one of the most certified regions in Spain.
