Aix-en-Provence has something many larger cities do not: two fully dedicated kitchens among its 5 verified addresses, one of them a bakery-patisserie run by a pastry chef who has celiac disease himself. The rest are mixed, and one of the three tables has little to offer beyond options. This guide separates the two clearly.
The city in numbers
The two 100% dedicated addresses
- La Manufacture Bio, rue Courteissade in the city centre: an entirely gluten-free bakery, patisserie and eatery, by Franck Belleton, a pastry chef who has celiac disease himself. Breads, brioches, cannelés, pizzas and fresh pasta, all gluten-free. This is the address for bread, and the one for a lunch where you ask no questions.
- L’Atelier du Mochi, rue Boulegon: Aix’s first artisan mochi shop, 100% gluten-free, by Mathilde and Joris, trained in Japan. Hand-made mochi, daifuku and ice cream mochi; only the daifuku are vegan.
The mixed tables
- Maurizio, rue des Tanneurs, an Italian trattoria with a terrace facing a fountain. The pasta is house-made and comes in a gluten-free version, to be asked for with just about every pasta dish. Mixed kitchen where wheat flour is worked: contamination is possible, here is what that changes. Say you are celiac.
- Restaurant Le Mirabeau, cours Mirabeau: gluten-free options exist, without a dedicated menu. The fryer is shared and wheat flour circulates; our sources indicate no particular measures. Say you are celiac, and expect to have to ask what is in each dish.
- Le Poivre d’Ane, place du Forum des Cardeurs: our database records only gluten-free options, with no other verified detail. An address to call ahead, not one to walk into with confidence.
Our tips on site
- Start with rue Courteissade. La Manufacture Bio settles the question of bread, lunch and dessert without risk; the rest of the city comes afterwards.
- In the three mixed tables, say “je suis cœliaque” (“I have celiac disease”), not “sans gluten”: that is what triggers a separate preparation, where one exists.
- Everything is walkable in the centre: rue Courteissade, rue Boulegon, rue des Tanneurs, cours Mirabeau and the Forum des Cardeurs are minutes apart.
- To understand why a dedicated kitchen changes everything, dedicated kitchen or gluten-free menu, the difference. For Provence and the rest of the country, our guide to gluten-free holidays in France.
