Spokane is not a destination one associates with gluten-free, and that is a pleasant surprise: of the 6 verified addresses in our database, 5 are fully dedicated kitchens. Two sit on the same street, in the north of the city; two more downtown; and there is a dedicated Belgian waffle house, which is not something you find on every corner in the United States.
The city in numbers
East Holland Avenue: two dedicated kitchens a hundred metres apart
Cole’s Bakery & Cafe, at 521 East Holland Avenue, is Spokane’s first fully gluten-free restaurant — Yelp, Visit Spokane and the Spokane Journal of Business confirm it. Breakfast, lunch and dinner all day: pancakes, burgers, pizzas, pasta and a wide range of house pastries, also peanut-free. This is the dinner address, the one not every city has.
Fresh and Foraged, at number 410 on the same avenue, is a 100% gluten-free café — “Fresh and Foraged is a 100% Gluten-free restaurant”, says its website — of salads, wraps, sandwiches, smoothies and açaí bowls, with house-made dairy-free sauces. A healthy canteen, a hundred numbers from Cole’s.
Downtown: waffles and tamales
People’s Waffle, at 15 South Howard Street, is a 100% gluten-free restaurant dedicated to waffles, opened in 2021: Belgian and Liège waffles, sweet or savoury, made with Bob’s Red Mill flours. A Gonzaga Bulletin article, the official website — everything agrees.
Tamale Box, in Kendall Yards (1102 West Summit Parkway), makes tamales and tortillas 100% gluten-free and lard-free in a fully dedicated kitchen — “Completely gluten free kitchen” on Yelp, “NEVER lard, NEVER gluten” on the official Instagram, confirmed by Atly.
Up north: Konala’s bowls
Konala, at 6740 North Division Street, offers, as in all its locations, an entirely gluten-free menu — protein bowls and salads — with a strict anti-contamination policy in the kitchen. One exception, and it matters: the bottled beers are not gluten-free. We show it on the listing. Eat everything, don’t drink the beer without reading the label.
The vegan café with a mixed kitchen
Boots Bakery & Lounge, at 19 West Main Avenue, is a fully vegan café-bakery with a wide selection of gluten-free dishes and pastries, clearly identified at the counter. But the kitchen is shared with products containing gluten — Yelp and Tripadvisor both say so. For a strict coeliac, it is an address to discuss with the team, not one to order at with your eyes closed.
Our tips on site
- “I have celiac disease”, not “I’m gluten-free”. The first triggers real precautions; the second is understood as a diet. Then: “Is the kitchen fully dedicated?”
- Group the north. Cole’s and Fresh and Foraged are on the same avenue; Konala is on North Division, a little further. A lunch and a dinner without leaving the north of the city.
- The beer at Konala is the only exception to a dedicated menu: the kind of detail you can’t guess, which is why we write it down.
- Continuing in the Pacific Northwest? Our guides to Seattle and Portland are a few hours’ drive away, and cross-contamination explains why a mixed kitchen remains a gamble.
