Curitiba may be the safest city in Brazil for coeliacs — relative to its size, the density of dedicated spots is striking. Our database lists 18 verified addresses, 16 of them entirely dedicated. The secret behind the capital of Paraná comes down to one acronym: ACELPAR, the state’s coeliac association, which certifies safe establishments — and its seal keeps showing up across the city’s addresses.

Dining that rivals São Paulo

The flagship is Uva & Alma: a restaurant, wine bar and sushi bar in the heart of the city, with a 100% gluten-free menu from chef Ivan Lopes and over 1,200 reviews (4.6★). In Batel, Santo from chef Lino Veríssimo proves that a fine-dining restaurant — pasta, lasagne, cocktails — can be entirely gluten-free. Sem Culpa (4.5★, 871 reviews) puts a gluten-free spin on traditional Brazilian cooking, coxinhas included, in the Hugo Lange neighbourhood. And Christine Valente Sem Glúten (4.9★) has the most compelling story of all: its founder, a chef and nutritionist, has lived with coeliac disease for 25 years — her pizzas are even sold at the city’s Festval supermarket.

A very Curitiba curiosity: Batatiba (4.7★), which specialises in “batata suíça” (loaded Swiss-style rösti), works out of an ACELPAR-certified isolated kitchen with strict protocols — disposable gloves, dedicated equipment. For Japanese food, Kokei offers plenty of options clearly marked for coeliacs, though on an otherwise general menu: quiz the staff just as you would at any restaurant as a coeliac.

Pizza: a dramatic conversion

Pizzaria Rigani, a Batel institution with 1,200 reviews (4.5★), made a bold move: going entirely gluten-free, with ACELPAR certification to back it up. Its Parisiense — brie, spiced jelly, apricots — is worth the trip. For delivery, Senza Grano (4.7★) serves 100% gluten-free pizzas and calzones out of Santa Felicidade. One word of caution at Habitué Pizzas Fit, though: the gluten-free crust is just one option on a menu that also handles wheat — the risk of cross-contamination is worth asking about.

Bakeries and sweets: six dedicated spots

Suli Confeitaria (4.9★) in Bigorrilho and Babycake (4.9★), a vegan bakery running in Batel since 2011, both carry a coeliac-safety seal. A Fada dos Bolos (4.7★), also ACELPAR-certified, treats Bom Retiro to vegan cakes. Casa di Pão is a pioneer of naturally fermented gluten-free baking — sourdough breads, esfirras, brownies — while Solsken Bakery, with its open kitchen, adds quinoa burgers to the mix. In Jardim das Américas, Caju Confeitaria (4.8★) makes for a safe coffee-and-quiche break.

Ice cream and groceries

Crema Lab (4.7★), a Batel gelateria founded by an Italian-trained gelato chef, takes the care all the way down to the cones, made gluten- and lactose-free. For grocery shopping: Veritá (4.9★), near Shopping Novo Batel, sells only gluten- and dairy-free products, and Almendras Emporium (4.9★) stocks suitable breads, wines, cheeses and chocolates in the São Francisco neighbourhood.

Tips for when you’re there

  • The phrase to know: “Sou celíaco / celíaca. É seguro para celíacos?” (“I’m coeliac. Is this safe for coeliacs?”) — “sem glúten” is understood everywhere.
  • Look for the ACELPAR seal: the Paraná coeliac association certifies safe venues — Rigani, Batatiba, Babycake and A Fada dos Bolos all display it.
  • Batel is the densest neighbourhood: a fine-dining restaurant, pizzeria, bakery, ice cream shop and grocery store, all dedicated and just a few streets apart.
  • On packaged products, Brazilian law requires the label “contém glúten” or “não contém glúten” (“contains gluten” / “does not contain gluten”) — an easy label-reading habit to pick up.
