The Hotel Monroe, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, 120 Walnut Street, is the first full-service hotel in the United States certified 100% gluten-free by the Gluten-Free Food Program. Its four dining venues — the restaurant Heirloom, the rooftop Star Bar, the shop and the lobby bar — are free of wheat, barley, rye and conventional oats. That last point matters: ordinary oats, contaminated outside a dedicated supply chain, are the usual trap for establishments that call themselves gluten-free. Here, they are excluded. Heirloom Restaurant, at the same address, is the hotel’s table: steaks, Gulf seafood and Southern classics, from breakfast to dinner, prepared gluten-free. The establishment holds certifications from both the Gluten-Free Food Program and the National Celiac Association, noted by Forbes, AFAR, Yahoo Travel, Yelp and the local tourism office.

The downtown bakery

Butter: A Louisiana Bakery, 2001 Tower Drive, is a 100% gluten-free bakery created by Charity Jones after her father-in-law was diagnosed with a wheat intolerance. Homemade pop-tarts, Southern-style sweets, and coffee whose beans are roasted in a dedicated facility, with no cross-contact. The dedicated status is confirmed by the official website, the National Celiac Association listing, Find Me Gluten Free and a report by local station KNOE.
