Lausanne offers a clear-cut case: of the 4 verified addresses, 4 are fully dedicated kitchens. No wheat flour on the premises, no “adapted” menu, no question to ask. The trade-off is just as clear-cut: these are four bakery-patisseries. Bread, viennoiseries, pastries and a few savory items are easy to find; for a sit-down meal, our database does not yet list a Lausanne restaurant.

The bread: Chambelland

Chambelland, 5 Voie du Chariot, is the Lausanne branch of the Paris shop founded by Thomas Teffri-Chambelland: an organic, naturally gluten-free bakery-patisserie, offering sourdough breads, whole rice flour focaccias, viennoiseries and pastries, with no additives or colorings. It is the city’s most established address for bread. Verified via the chambelland.com website, its Lausanne Facebook and Instagram accounts, and quandestcequonmange.ch.

The El Gato shop, on two addresses

El Gato Pâtisserie, 38 rue Marterey, is the first gluten-free and dairy-free patisserie in Lausanne: viennoiseries, breads and pastries, to take away or enjoy in the small tea room upstairs. Verified via the elgatopatisserie.ch website, Lausanne Tourisme, La Chouquette and Tripadvisor.

Le Laboratoire by El Gato, 50 avenue de Chailly, is the second address of the same shop, fully dedicated to gluten-free and dairy-free breads and pastries, with a selection that changes with the seasons, vegan versions and a few seats for eating on site. The shop has worked in gluten-free for more than eight years. Sources: the official website, Le Temps, La Route de Ben and Lausanne Tourisme.

The savory patisserie: Elssi

Elssi Pâtisserie, 12 avenue Frédéric-César-de-la-Harpe, near the Délices metro station, is the newest: founded by Mathilde Roumier in 2023, specializing in gluten-free and dairy-free pastries and savory products — viennoiseries, quiches, salads and “choudwiches,” with local, seasonal ingredients. This is where lunch comes closest to a real meal. One practical point to note: custom orders must be placed 48 hours in advance. Verified via elssipatisserie.ch, Lausanne Tourisme and Facebook.

Our tips on site

  • Say “Je suis cœliaque,” not just “sans gluten.” Even in a fully dedicated shop, this is what gets you a precise answer about a specific product.
  • The reference association in French-speaking Switzerland is the ARC, the Association romande de la cœliakie; the IG Zöliakie covers German-speaking Switzerland. It is the first point of contact for an extended stay.
  • Plan ahead for Elssi: 48 hours’ notice for a custom order, and a trip to Chailly for the Laboratoire, away from the other three addresses.
  • Plan your evening meal elsewhere. None of these four addresses is a restaurant: if you dine out in town, you will be in a mixed kitchen, with the precautions that requires.
  • Continuing your trip through Switzerland? Our guide to gluten-free travel in Switzerland covers the rest of the country, and dedicated kitchen or gluten-free menu, the difference explains why these four shops are not comparable to an “adapted” menu.
