Glasgow leans on a quirk of cuisine: its two entirely gluten-free tables are South Indian, a tradition built on rice, lentils and chickpea flour rather than wheat. Of the 5 verified addresses in our database, 5 are fully dedicated kitchens, and two of them are accredited by Coeliac UK. The rest leans sweet: two bakeries and Scotland’s first crumble bar.
The city in numbers
The two Coeliac UK-accredited South Indian restaurants
Dakhin, 89 Candleriggs, is Scotland’s first South Indian restaurant, entirely gluten-free and Coeliac UK accredited. Dosas, idlis and coastal curries are served with no wheat-related risk at all, since they’re naturally built on rice, lentils and chickpea flour. The accreditation is documented on the house’s site.
Madurai, 142a Saint Vincent Street, in the city center, follows the same logic: a 100% gluten-free menu built around rice, lentils and traditional spices, at an establishment that is also Coeliac UK accredited. It’s the other sit-down meal in the selection.
The sweet side: bakeries and crumbles
Wild Flours Bakery, 526 Kilmarnock Road, in the south of Glasgow, is a 100% gluten-free bakery founded in 2013 by Anne and Calum: breads, pastries, cakes, pizzas and sausage rolls, all prepared with no trace of gluten on site. The place goes as far as banning anyone from bringing gluten onto the premises.
Whip - Gluten Free Bakery, 197 London Road, is a 100% dedicated bakery-patisserie founded by a pastry chef who is herself celiac: wedding cakes, biscuits, breads and treats, offered in changing weekly runs. Since the runs change, it’s best to check what’s on offer before crossing town.
The Crumbleologist is Scotland’s first crumble bar, entirely gluten-free, dairy-free and soy-free: warm fruit crumbles topped with custard, made entirely on site. One useful detail: it’s a mobile stand, present around Suffolk Street and the Barras — check it’s there before heading over.
Our tips on site
- Say “I have celiac disease,” not “I’m gluten-free.” The latter passes for a dietary choice; the former triggers precautions. Then: “Is the kitchen fully dedicated?”
- Look for Coeliac UK accreditation. The British national association accredits establishments, and two of our five addresses are among them: it’s the most reliable marker in the country beyond this selection.
- The east side gathers two addresses. Whip is on London Road and The Crumbleologist operates around Suffolk Street and the Barras; Wild Flours is to the south, on Kilmarnock Road, and the two South Indian restaurants are central.
