Oviedo is a favorable case in our database: of the 4 verified addresses, 4 are fully dedicated kitchens. Not a single mixed table, not one “adapted” menu. Three restaurants and an artisan bakery, including an institution honored by FACE, the Spanish federation of celiac associations. Traditional Asturian cooking, often out of reach elsewhere, can be eaten here without reservation.
The city in numbers
The three dedicated restaurants
Restaurante El Fartuquin, Calle Carpio, is the address to remember: a cider house and traditional Asturian table — fabada, cachopo — entirely gluten-free, voted Spain’s best gluten-free restaurant by FACE in 2019. The status is confirmed by the Asociación Celíaca del Principado de Asturias and by Celicidad. It’s the only place in our database where these dishes can be ordered without discussion.
Meraki, Plaza del Paraguas, right in the historic heart of the city, is a 100% gluten-free restaurant serving world cuisine with Asturian touches, with a sunny terrace. It’s listed on the website of the Asturian celiac association — with a phone number matching our data — and referenced by TripAdvisor.
El Bucanero, Calle Manuel García Conde, in the center, is an American-style restaurant opened in 2022 whose website states plainly: “Nuestra carta es 100% libre de gluten, sin renuncias ni excepciones” (“our menu is 100% gluten-free, no compromises and no exceptions”). Burgers, fried food and desserts — so fried food too, which is unusual — and a list of 52 gluten-free beers. Confirmed by Celicidad and TripAdvisor.
The bakery in the historic center
La Amasería, at the esquina del Peso in the historic center, is an artisan bakery that is 100% gluten-free: pastries, bagels, wraps and empanadas. It also supplies several restaurants in town with gluten-free bread — useful to know if you’re offered bread elsewhere in Oviedo, even though that says nothing about the kitchen serving it. The official website carries the notice “100% sin gluten,” and the Glovo listing and Google reviews (4.9/5 over 11 reviews) agree.
Our tips on site
- Say “Soy celíaco” or “Soy celíaca” rather than “sin gluten.” Even in a dedicated kitchen, it’s the phrase that sets everyone’s expectations at the right level.
- Look for the FACE logo. The Spanish federation of celiac associations is the national marker; El Fartuquin won its 2019 award. At the regional level, it’s the Asociación Celíaca del Principado de Asturias that lists establishments, including Meraki.
- The historic center holds most of it. La Amasería and Meraki share postal code 33009, El Bucanero the neighboring 33001: three of the four addresses can be walked in the same outing.
- Moving on elsewhere in Spain? Our guide to gluten-free travel in Spain covers the rest of the country, and the AFDIAG, AIC and FACE certifications explain what each label really guarantees.
