Edinburgh is one of those cities where the question of risk barely arises: of the 5 verified addresses in our database, 5 are fully dedicated kitchens — no wheat flour on the premises. Two bakeries, a Mexican restaurant that takes the separation right down to the fryers, a gelateria and a Brazilian crêpe stand. Three of them are clustered to the south, around Bruntsfield.
The city in numbers
The two tables
Bodega, 14-15 Albert Place, is the city’s entirely gluten-free Mexican restaurant, and the wording matters: no wheat product enters the building, and the establishment uses a dedicated cooking area and dedicated fryers. Tacos, mains and vegan options, on a menu designed for maximum safety. Four sources agree, including Coeliac Sanctuary.
Tupiniquim, housed in a former police box — the Green Police Box on Lauriston Place — serves sweet and savoury Brazilian crêpes that are 100% gluten-free. The founder’s own family is celiac, and the place is recognized for taking the subject seriously without sacrificing indulgence.
Bakeries and ice cream, in Bruntsfield
Confelicity Bakery, 167 Bruntsfield Place, is a 100% gluten-free bakery-café founded by a celiac chef who trained in Tom Kitchin’s kitchens. Bread, sandwiches and pastries are made there with no risk of cross-contamination. It is the address for lunch or a mid-day snack.
Sugar Daddy’s Bakery, 8 Roseneath Street, is a 100% gluten-free bakery-patisserie where most products are also vegan: cakes, biscuits, brownies, sandwiches, and even pizza. Tripadvisor reviews are unanimous on the quality, with some customers not realizing the products are gluten-free.
Ciccetta’s, 26 Bruntsfield Avenue, opened in early 2026: an entirely gluten-free gelateria, ice creams and sorbets made on site in small batches, with a menu that changes every week. Salted pistachio and strawberry-lavender come back most often in customers’ favourites.
Our tips on site
- Say “I have celiac disease”, not “I’m gluten-free”. The first triggers real precautions; the second passes for a chosen diet. Then: “Is the kitchen fully dedicated?”
- Coeliac UK is the national association, and it accredits establishments: that is the marker to look for beyond our five addresses, where the question does not arise.
- Bruntsfield gathers three addresses. Confelicity Bakery (Bruntsfield Place), Ciccetta’s (Bruntsfield Avenue) and Sugar Daddy’s (Roseneath Street) are in the same area, south of the centre. Bodega, on Albert Place, and Tupiniquim, on Lauriston Place, each require a trip.
