Chartres fits within a radius of three streets around the cathedral, and so do its 3 verified addresses. None is a dedicated kitchen: two buckwheat crêperies and a café-brasserie, all with wheat flour alongside. The most interesting story in town is a mill set up in a dining room; the most concrete risk is a shared griddle.

The two crêperies

  • Crep’Salads, rue Serpente, a step away from the cathedral: the owner mills his own organic buckwheat in a small electric mill set up in the dining room, and the galettes are made with flour ground at the last moment. Savoury galettes and gluten-free salads on the menu. But the wheat crêpes are worked in the same kitchen, and Find Me Gluten Free classes the address as non-dedicated, not advised for celiacs. Best reserved for mild intolerances, or to be discussed with the owner.
  • La Picoterie, rue des Changes: 100% gluten-free buckwheat galettes, desserts included if you ask for a buckwheat crêpe, and a menu consulted on an iPad with allergens detailed dish by dish. Wheat crêpes are made on the same billigs — the traditional crêpe griddles: speak up on arrival. What a shared griddle changes is explained here.

The café at the foot of the cathedral

Le Café Serpente, cloître Notre-Dame, a café-brasserie set at the foot of the south tower in a 14th-century building, with a terrace facing the portal. Gluten-free dishes are flagged directly on the menu, and Find Me Gluten Free notes positive reviews from celiac customers. The kitchen is still mixed and the official website mentions no anti-contamination protocol: state your intolerance when ordering.

Our tips on site

  • Say “je suis cœliaque” (“I have celiac disease”): in three mixed kitchens, it is the word that prompts the question of the griddle.
  • Ask about the griddle before the galette: it is the one point that separates a good address from a bad one in Chartres, and neither crêperie reports a dedicated one.
  • All on foot: rue Serpente, rue des Changes and the cloître Notre-Dame are next to each other.
  • No dedicated bakery in our database in Chartres: plan for bread. Paris is an hour away, and the rest of the country is in our guide to gluten-free holidays in France.
