Berlin is, by far, Germany’s gluten-free capital: 13 verified spots, all fully dedicated — the first city in our database for Germany, which counts 90 nationwide. The Berlin scene has a character all its own: many of these places were founded by people who are themselves coeliac, and the city blends gluten-free eating with its other culinary cultures — vegan, organic, cuisines from around the world. You can eat tacos, Brazilian tapioca, Greek mezze and sourdough bread here without ever crossing paths with wheat.

Bakeries that paved the way

In the land of Brot, going without a bakery is heartbreaking — Berlin figured that out early. Jute Bäckerei, on Schönhauser Allee in Prenzlauer Berg, is the city’s first gluten-free bakery: bread, rolls and pastries made from corn, rice, millet or buckwheat, to organic and Demeter standards. Near Rosenthaler Platz, AERA was founded by Ava Celik, herself coeliac: sourdough, viennoiseries, cookies and good coffee in a warm setting. And Oshione (4.5★), artisanal and fully gluten-free since 2020, made a name for itself with its cinnamon rolls — so much so that it opened a second location, adding soy-free and corn-free products plus vegan options.

A world tour in dedicated kitchens

This is Berlin’s signature: every major world cuisine has a fully gluten-free version here. El Amigo Taqueria (4.8★, over 1,500 reviews — the most-reviewed spot in our Berlin database) serves gluten-free tacos, quesadillas and tortillas, including homemade sauces. Brazil is represented twice over: Tapiocaria, in Friedrichshain since 2014, serves tapioca sweet and savoury with a detailed allergen list, and Pondji (4.7★) cooks up pão de queijo, moqueca and feijoada in a kitchen with no gluten ingredients whatsoever. In Mitte, The Crazy Little Greek (4.7★) bills itself as the world’s first vegan, gluten-free Greek restaurant — mezze, bowls and reimagined traditional desserts. And since 2025, Trattoria Senza (4.7★) has been Berlin’s first fully gluten-free and lactose-free Italian restaurant, with a team of Italian chefs and five gluten-free pasta dishes on the menu.

Cafés built by and for coeliacs

Pretty Hill (4.7★) takes rigour further than anyone: its founder Rhonda-Lee, herself coeliac, doesn’t even let staff bring gluten onto the premises — sandwiches, cheesecakes and ice cream served in corn or rice cones. In Prenzlauer Berg, EasyPeasy (4.7★) is both 100% vegan and 100% gluten-free, with Belgian waffles and brunches where you can order anything without a second thought. Near Ku’damm, Sinless Cakes Cafe (4.8★) serves only gluten-free cakes, often made with almond flour and no refined sugar. In Mitte, PURE NOGLUTEN (4.9★) offers a short, carefully curated menu — specialty coffee, bagels, pastries — from a fully dedicated kitchen. And Soul Kitchen House (4.9★), a bistro-café in Friedrichshain, excludes wheat, barley, rye and oats from its vegan, no-added-sugar kitchen.

Tips for your visit

  • The phrase to know: “Ich habe Zöliakie — ist das glutenfrei?” (“I have coeliac disease — is this gluten-free?”). The word glutenfrei is widely understood, and English gets you by anywhere in Berlin.
  • The DZG (Deutsche Zöliakie-Gesellschaft) is Germany’s reference coeliac association: its resources and the crossed-grain-ear logo on German products are your go-to markers in supermarkets.
  • Three neighbourhoods cover most of it: Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg and Friedrichshain — stay in one of the three and most spots will be a few U-Bahn stops away.
  • Watch out for beer: this is Germany — always specify glutenfreies Bier, and several dedicated spots offer it.
