Sarasota is a city with no bad surprises in our database: of the 4 verified addresses, 4 are fully dedicated kitchens, with no wheat flour on the premises. A Latin American restaurant, a takeout empanada counter, a plant-based café and a juice bar. Two of them sit just a few streets apart downtown; none is a mixed kitchen.
The city in numbers
The downtown eateries
Comida, 1534 State Street, is a 100% gluten-free, seed-oil-free Latin American restaurant, entirely house-made: dishes from southern Mexico, Central America and South America, fritters, tortillas, fried chicken and seafood. The fried chicken is worth flagging, since it’s exactly the dish a celiac avoids everywhere else — here, no wheat flour enters the building. The official website, and rankings from Atly and OpenTable confirm it.
Ionie Living Food & Tonics, 1444 1st Street, a few streets away, is an organic, plant-based café that’s entirely gluten-free: cold-pressed juices, smoothies, noodles, falafel, pancakes. The dedicated status is confirmed by the official website, Yelp and TripAdvisor, where the address ranks among the city’s top 225 restaurants.
Takeout, and the juice bar
Empanadas Valrico, 1617 Desoto Road, is the brand’s second location: crispy empanadas, arepas, buñuelos and pandebonos prepared with no trace of gluten whatsoever. Takeout only — don’t count on it for a sit-down meal. The staff are known for their understanding of celiac needs, and TripAdvisor and Yelp confirm the dedicated status.
Crop Juice Stickney, 2480 Stickney Point Road, to the south, is a 100% gluten-free juice bar: organic cold-pressed juices, smoothies, vegan dishes to go and house-made fritters. The National Celiac Association confirms the dedicated status. One note from the house: blenders and presses are shared across recipes — gluten-free within the establishment, but worth knowing if you’re managing other allergies too.
Our tips on site
- Say “I have celiac disease,” not “I’m gluten-free”: in the United States, the second phrase reads as a preference, the first as a medical condition.
- The reference associations are the Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG) and Beyond Celiac. The GIG issues the country’s most widespread gluten-free certification — that’s the logo to look for in the window.
- Downtown has two addresses, Comida on State Street and Ionie on 1st Street. The other two, on Desoto Road and Stickney Point Road, are further out.
