Mar del Plata is a holiday town, and that is exactly what makes its offering remarkable: 7 verified addresses, and all 7 are fully dedicated. In a seaside resort where millions of Argentinians arrive every summer, gluten-free catering could easily have stopped at a few adapted dishes. It did not. The country has much to do with it: national law 26.588 governs the management of coeliac disease, and the official «Sin TACC» logo — sin Trigo, Avena, Cebada, Centeno — appears on thousands of products. The national association, ACELA, completes the picture. But the Mar del Plata specificity lies elsewhere: here, gluten-free was built around a food that wheat never touched.
What the city holds
Chipá, the backbone of the local gluten-free scene
Chipá is a small cheese roll made from cassava starch, inherited from Paraguay and the Argentinian north-east. It contains no wheat — not because it was adapted, but because it never did. In Mar del Plata, two businesses have built entire models on it.
Chipasito Sin TACC (4.9★, more than 230 reviews) holds the city’s best rating in our database. On calle Entre Ríos, the shop uses chipá dough as the base for sandwiches, pizzas and empanadas — a clever move that solves the bread problem in one stroke. It runs as a takeaway rotisserie: there is no table service.
Los Chipa de la Tía, at the corner of 20 de Septiembre, is the most reviewed address in our Mar del Plata selection (more than 450 reviews). Paired with Masa Sana, it widens the range: pizza bases, breads, medialunas, alfajores and biscuits, all sin TACC. One caveat regulars report: freshness varies from day to day — aim for what has just come out of the oven.
Fresh pasta, pizza and cantina: Argentinian classics, dedicated
il Toscano (4.6★, more than 300 reviews), on calle San Lorenzo, presents itself as the city’s first rotisserie exclusively for coeliacs, opened in 2012. Fresh pasta, empanadas, pizzas and prepared dishes, with a menu validated by a nutritionist. It is the address to remember for stocking a rental freezer.
On calle Güemes, Java Gluten Free (4.6★) is a 100% gluten-free pizzeria serving pizzas and empanadas in about fifteen minutes, with vegan options. And on calle Alvarado, Cantina del Rey (4.6★, more than 400 reviews) claims the title of Mar del Plata’s first 100% sin TACC restaurant, with a traditional cantina menu adapted throughout. In fairness: that claim is reported consistently by several local directories and blogs, but we found neither an official site nor a primary source to confirm it.
Stocking up
On Avenida Mario Bravo, Senzza Glutine (5.0★) is a health-food shop devoted entirely to gluten-free products and now a local reference point: a broad selection of certified sin TACC food. It is the sensible first stop on arrival, especially if you are staying in an apartment. For something sweet, La Frutilla Del Postre, on calle Bolívar, is a sin TACC patisserie specialising in cakes and desserts — a small operation, whose information comes mainly from its own social accounts and from local listings of coeliac-friendly addresses.
Our tips on the ground
- The phrase to know: «Soy celíaco / celíaca — ¿esto lleva gluten?» In Argentina, add «¿es sin TACC?»: it is the wording understood most immediately.
- Look for the «Sin TACC» logo: it is official, framed by national law 26.588, and present on thousands of supermarket products — far more than in Europe. Our label-reading habits apply here in simplified form.
- Chipá is your ally: made from cassava starch, it never contained wheat. Two dedicated addresses have made it their speciality.
- Beware the wheat classics: facturas, medialunas, milanesas and traditional alfajores are kneaded or breaded with flour. Keep them for the dedicated addresses.
- Plan around the summer hours: the city runs to the rhythm of the season, and several of these addresses work mainly as takeaway.
