Knoxville has 3 verified addresses, and all 3 are fully dedicated kitchens. Two of them are under the same roof, at Kern’s Food Hall: the rare case where a celiac has a choice between two counters in the same spot. The third is a bakery-café open since 2012. Only one caveat in this guide, and it concerns the fryer.
The city in numbers
The two stalls at Kern’s Food Hall
Disco Chicken & Donuts, 2201 Kerns Rising Way, is Knoxville’s first fully gluten-free restaurant: fried chicken tenders, smoked mac & cheese and a dozen flavors of house-made donuts, prepared gluten-free from the start. The official site and its FAQ advertise “100% gluten-free,” and the establishment is listed by the National Celiac Association. The risk to know: our listing flags a shared fryer. On a menu built around frying, ask whether the fryer is dedicated before ordering.
WokXville, same address, serves fully gluten-free Asian food within the same food hall: noodles, wok stir-fries, dumplings and grilled meats, designed so a celiac can order anything. That includes the soy sauce, almost always wheat-based elsewhere. Status confirmed by a Knoxville News Sentinel article and takingthekids.com. It’s a separate stall from Disco Chicken & Donuts, not a duplicate: the two simply share the food hall’s address.
The bakery-café on Kingston Pike
Benefit Your Life Bakery & Cafe, 10420 Kingston Pike, is the city’s only fully gluten-free bakery-café, open since 2012. Pastries, lunch dishes, smoothies and groceries all coexist in an establishment that allows no gluten-containing food on the premises — not even one a customer might bring in. Yelp, the tourism office and the official site all describe the same level of rigor.
Our on-site tips
- Say “I have celiac disease,” never “I’m gluten-free”: only the first phrase is heard as a medical requirement.
- At Kern’s Food Hall, ask about the fryer at Disco Chicken & Donuts: “Is the fryer dedicated?” It’s the only risk flagged among Knoxville’s three addresses.
- The national landmarks are the Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG) and Beyond Celiac. None of the three addresses claims a certification, but the National Celiac Association references one of them.
- For the rest of the trip, our guide to gluten-free travel in the USA, and dedicated kitchen vs. gluten-free menu, the difference.
