Girona counts 4 verified addresses, including 3 fully dedicated kitchens — with no wheat flour on the premises. The city suits breakfast, an afternoon snack and brunch well: a bakery that also makes pizzas, an ice cream shop, two cafés. The fourth address is the interesting case of the bunch, and the one that needs an explanation.

The three fully dedicated addresses

Bye Bye Blat Fleca Degustació, plaça Salvador Espriu, is a downtown bakery-patisserie created to meet celiac needs: breads, pizzas and pastries, with an entirely gluten-free menu. The house sums itself up with “0% gluten, 100% fetén!”, and Tripadvisor, celiacPlan, its Facebook page and glutenfreemap.es confirm.

Madonna Ice Creams, carrer de la Cort Reial 22, is a 100% gluten-free ice cream shop — ice cream and cones included, which is far from a given — with more than thirty house-made vegan flavors, up to usually risky ones like Oreo. Confirmed via Tripadvisor and Instagram.

MonerCafè, carrer de Sant Joan Bta. la Salle, is a casual coffee shop built around specialty coffee and house-made pastry, entirely gluten-free, with a house-made sourdough — gluten-free and vegan — for its tostadas. Cross-referenced sources confirm a small 100% gluten-free obrador integrated into the coffee shop.

The mixed address, and why it is one

SELVA Cafè d’especialitat i cuina tropical, carrer Migdia, was founded by a celiac person and its menu — toasts, bowls, house-made pastries, lunch menu — is nearly entirely gluten-free. But the house keeps a traditional wheat-based sourdough bread for non-intolerant customers, prepared and stored in a dedicated, isolated space to prevent cross-contamination. We have therefore classed it as a gluten-free menu rather than a dedicated kitchen: as soon as wheat flour exists under the same roof, the risk is no longer zero, even when well managed. State your condition when ordering. Celinews, Celiaquita.com and the official site document the establishment and this exception.

Our tips on site

  • Say “Soy celíaco” or “Soy celíaca” (I am celiac), rather than “sin gluten.” In Catalan, “Sóc celíac” or “Sóc celíaca” works just as well. This is the word that triggers real precautions.
  • Look for the FACE logo. The Federación de Asociaciones de Celíacos de España is the national federation of celiac associations and the country’s reference marker, even though none of our four Girona addresses currently displays its certification.
  • The center gathers three addresses — plaça Salvador Espriu, carrer de la Cort Reial and carrer Migdia are walkable.
  • Continuing in Spain? Our guide to gluten-free travel in Spain covers the rest of the country.
