Bergamo looks like no other Italian city on our map. Here there are 7 verified addresses, all 7 fully dedicated — but four of them are grocers. This is a city where coeliacs shop rather than dine out: they stock up at specialist stores, often working with the local ASL health scheme, and go home to cook. For a traveller, that changes how you plan a stay. The framework remains the best in Europe — the Associazione Italiana Celiachia (AIC) issues its “Alimentazione Fuori Casa” label, screening is routine in childhood and the state pays a monthly allowance to diagnosed patients, as we describe in our guide to gluten-free Italy.

Two places to eat, and they are good

The number is modest; the quality is not. Frish (4.8★) holds the top rating in our Bergamo selection: a fish and chips takeaway counter that opened in late 2024 in Borgo Santa Caterina and made gluten-free its signature from day one. The entire menu is gluten-free and the batter uses nothing but certified rice flour — which is exactly the critical point for this dish, since shared fryers and wheat breadcrumbs are the two standard traps of fish and chips.

On Via Borgo Palazzo, El Boss del Taco (4.6★, more than 580 reviews) has been serving entirely gluten-free Mexican food since 2020: tacos on handmade tortillas, selected meats, house sauces and traditional cocktails. The venue is AIC-certified and the staff trained in gluten-free protocols — no small thing in a cuisine where corn tortillas sit next to wheat tortillas almost everywhere else. This is the address to note for a proper sit-down meal.

The bakehouse and the fresh-pasta workshop

Privo Bergamo (4.7★), on Via Baioni, is the city’s dedicated bakehouse: founded by two young bakers, it turns out bread, pizza, piadine, focaccia and pastries entirely gluten-free every day — including colomba and panettone in season, which settles the question of the Christmas and Easter cakes otherwise out of reach.

In the Monterosso-Valtesse district, Il Fresco Senza Glutine (4.6★) is an artisan workshop founded by Monia Beretta that produces gluten-free only: bread, focaccia, fresh pasta — tortelli, gnocchi, lasagne — and pastries. The address appears among Italy’s 200 best shops for coeliacs. This is where you find the filled pasta missing from the table.

Four grocers, and that is not a shortcoming

It is Bergamo’s particularity, and a useful one. Bergamo Senza Glutine (4.7★), on Viale Ernesto Pirovano, specialises entirely in gluten-free and lactose-free products — fresh, dry and frozen — and works with the Bergamo ASL scheme. On Via Pietro Spino, Celiachia Point Bergamo (4.7★) has been trading since 2008 with more than 1,000 lines (breads, pasta, frozen goods, flours, biscuits) authorised by the Italian health ministry and listed in the AIC directory: it is the reference house of the area, and the longevity counts as a guarantee here.

Milano Senza Glutine (4.5★), on Via Sant’Ambrogio, is the Bergamo branch of a dedicated Lombard chain: flours, fresh bread, pastries, pizza and a children’s section — useful when travelling as a family and a snack has to be found quickly.

Our tips on the ground

  • The phrase to know: «Sono celiaco / celiaca — questo contiene glutine?» In Italy it is almost always enough to trigger the right reflexes in the kitchen.
  • Look for the AIC logo: Celiachia Point Bergamo and El Boss del Taco are recognised by the Associazione Italiana Celiachia, which audits venues one by one.
  • Nothing in the Città Alta: all 7 addresses are in the lower town and its outer districts. Allow for the funicular or a fifteen-minute walk from the walls.
  • Shop before you climb: with four dedicated grocers and only two places to eat, Bergamo rewards preparation. A loaf from Privo or Il Fresco in the bag changes a day of sightseeing.
