Tarragona has 3 verified addresses, including 2 fully dedicated kitchens. A family café-restaurant and a gluten-free bakery cover meals, bread and sweets; the third address, an Argentine bar, claims to be gluten-free but we could not confirm it through an independent source. That’s not much for a city this size, and it’s solid for the first two.
The city in numbers
The two dedicated addresses
Espai La Vall, Carrer Llorenç Villalonga, is the best option for a meal: a family café-restaurant with a kids’ area, entirely gluten-free. Sandwiches, salads, burgers, crêpes, pasta, tortilla, homemade pastries, and even gluten-free churros, which implies a dedicated fryer. Espailavall.com’s homepage states “Todos nuestros productos son naturales y libres de gluten,” and celiaquita.com confirms a 100% gluten-free menu.
SENSE TGN, Carrer del Taquígraf Martí, is presented as the first gluten-free bakery in the province: bread, pastries, pizzas and patisserie, entirely dedicated, ordered in person or via WhatsApp. Atly lists it as “100% Dedicated Gluten-Free.” It’s the address for bread for the whole stay.
The Argentine bar, and our reservation
Baires Bar, 9 Carrer del Còs del Bou, in the centre, serves Argentine food, empanadas and grilled meats, and its entire menu is advertised as gluten-free, by celiac customers and on TheFork, with consistent mentions on Atly. But the place advertises itself as gluten-free and we found no independent source confirming it: no certification, no description of the kitchen protocol. We therefore classify it cautiously as a gluten-free menu, not a dedicated kitchen. Announce your celiac disease when ordering and ask how the grilled meats and empanadas are handled.
Our tips on site
- Say “Soy celíaco” or “Soy celíaca” (“I am celiac”), “Sóc celíac” or “Sóc celíaca” in Catalan. At Baires Bar in particular, that’s the word that triggers real precautions.
- FACE is the national reference, the Spanish federation of celiac associations: none of these three addresses displays its certification; their status rests on specialist sources and, for Baires Bar, on the establishment’s own claim alone.
- For a dedicated bakery in the province, MACU Gluten Free Bakery is in Vilanova i la Geltrú, about sixty kilometres away on the coast: a detour worth making for a birthday cake.
- Continuing your trip in Spain? Our guide gluten-free travel in Spain covers the rest of the country, and dedicated kitchen or gluten-free menu, the difference explains what sets the first two addresses apart from the third.
