Porto-Vecchio has 3 verified addresses and no dedicated kitchen, which is the lot of holiday towns. What sets it apart is one address that has understood: a bar-crêperie where announcing your celiac disease triggers an order flagged to the kitchen and equipment cleaned. The other two call for more vigilance, and one of them has a gap between its online menu and its paper menu that is worth knowing about.
The city in numbers
The bar-crêperie that has understood
Shirley’s Bar, rue Joseph Pietri in the centre: a bar-crêperie whose buckwheat galettes are gluten-free, with an identified gluten-free menu and plant-based milk. The kitchen also works with wheat flour, but the reviews describe serious handling: announce celiac disease and the team cleans the equipment and notes the order for the kitchen, right down to serving the salad with neutral condiments. It is not a dedicated kitchen; it is a team that knows what it is doing.
The table and the ice cream shop
- Restaurant Furana Porto Vecchio, near the Porte Génoise, terrace over the old town, Mediterranean cooking. The menu on the website flags the gluten-free dishes, which cover much of the mains, but the paper menu carries no such notes, and reviews report that the waiters list the dishes without commenting on cross-contamination. We class the claim as unverified: ask the waiter or the chef how the dish is prepared. Closed from December to February, open Thursday to Sunday out of season.
- La Gelateria by L’ Art de la Glace, cours Napoléon in the old town: an artisan ice cream shop making its ice creams and sorbets on site, without colourings, with allergens displayed in the shop and gluten-free cones. The shop also handles standard cones: ask for a cup or a fresh cone, and a clean spatula.
Our tips on site
- Say “je suis cœliaque” (“I have celiac disease”): at Shirley’s it is what sets the protocol going; elsewhere it is the only way to get an answer about the preparation.
- Do not rely on the online menu at Furana: the paper menu says something different. Put the question to the chef.
- Everything is walkable in the old town: rue Joseph Pietri, the Porte Génoise and the cours Napoléon are next to each other.
- No dedicated bakery in our database in Porto-Vecchio: plan for bread. Ajaccio has its own guide, cross-contamination explains what a mixed kitchen changes, and the rest of the country is in our gluten-free holidays in France.
