Maceió has 4 verified addresses, 2 of them fully dedicated kitchens. It is a two-speed city: two addresses where you order without a single question, and two mixed kitchens where cross-contamination is possible and you must speak up. The good news is that the two safe addresses cover the essentials — Brazilian savory snacks on one side, Northeastern-Brazilian regional cuisine on the other.

The two fully dedicated kitchens

SanGlu, avenue Doutor Antônio Gomes de Barros in the Jatiúca neighborhood, is a 100% gluten- and dairy-free bakery-café, running since 2014. The menu spotlights Brazilian savory snacks — coxinha, quiches, empadas, pastéis — and sweets like bolo formigueiro. That is precisely the category of food a celiac can never get elsewhere. Local press as well as official accounts confirm it.

Tapioca Maria Bonita, on the same avenue, has served Northeastern-Brazilian regional cuisine with a “zero gluten” menu since 1997: tapiocas, sweet potato or cassava coxinhas. Tapioca and cassava are naturally wheat-free, but it is the shop’s commitment across the whole menu — repeated on its Facebook page and Instagram bio — that makes the address safe, rather than the ingredient alone. The establishment is listed on TripAdvisor.

The two mixed addresses, and their risks

Mari Massa, rua Durval Guimarães in Ponta Verde, is an artisan café-bakery-grocery known for its gluten-free, dairy-free, unrefined-ingredient breads and homemade products. Gluten-free bread and breakfast are highlighted, but as part of a broader offering: no source mentions a fully dedicated kitchen, so we have cautiously classified it as a gluten-free menu. Cross-contamination is possible: announce yourself when ordering.

Papa Fritas, a gourmet fries food truck based at Truckzone and also present at Shopping Pátio Maceió, advertises an offering designed for gluten-free customers, and the creations are well rated. Two reservations, in this order: we could not confirm that a fryer there is exclusively reserved for gluten-free use — a fryer shared with breaded products contaminates the fries, without exception; and the establishment advertises itself as adapted without any independent source backing it up. For a strict celiac, this address does not work as is.

Our tips on site

  • Say “Sou celíaco” or “Sou celíaca,” rather than “sem glúten.” In Brazil, it is this word that triggers real precautions in the kitchen.
  • Ask about the fryer at the two mixed addresses: “A fritadeira é só para sem glúten?” It is the most common point of contamination, and the most often overlooked.
  • FENACELBRA, the Federação Nacional das Associações de Celíacos do Brasil, is the country’s reference national association for celiacs.
  • Traveling elsewhere in Brazil? Our guide to gluten-free travel in Brazil covers the rest of the country, and cross-contamination details what is at stake in a mixed kitchen like Mari Massa’s or Papa Fritas’s.
