Lucca has 4 verified addresses, 3 of them fully dedicated kitchens. The profile is unusual: not a single table where you sit down for dinner, but a patisserie, a takeaway bakery lab and a specialty supermarket — the city is built for stocking up, not for being served. The fourth address, an ice cream shop, is mixed, and we deliberately downgraded it after verification.

The three dedicated addresses

Atelier Damiano Carrara, Via Matteo Civitali, is the patisserie of TV pastry chef Damiano Carrara, opened in 2021 out of personal commitment — his partner is celiac. The entire display case is gluten-free: cakes, chocolates, jams, made in a glass-walled lab attached to the shop. Five Italian press and specialized-blog sources agree on this point.

Glee gluten lactose free lab, Via Alfredo Catalani, is a 100% gluten-free bakery-patisserie lab: viennoiseries, focaccia, pizza, fresh pasta, pastries, with dairy-free and vegan options. Two useful notes. First, it is takeaway only, there is no dining room. Second, in the interest of transparency: the official website speaks of a “laboratorio dedicato” without displaying a “100%” slogan; it is the convergence of independent sources — two specialized sites confirm the 100% — that leads us to record it as dedicated.

TAT - Tutti A Tavola, Via Pisana, is a large gluten-free and dairy-free specialty supermarket: around 1,000 items, fresh homemade bread and pastries, cooking workshops with chefs. No product containing gluten is sold there. It is affiliated with the Tuscan ASLs, which means the food vouchers granted to celiacs living in Tuscany are accepted there. The average rating recorded is 4.8/5.

The ice cream shop, not to be mistaken for a dedicated address

I Gelati di Piero, Via Roma, is a family-run gelateria that dedicates a selection of flavors to celiacs, made separately in isolated tubs to limit contact. But the shop keeps producing wheat-based flavors alongside them: the kitchen is mixed and the risk of cross-contamination exists. Our sources initially classified it as dedicated; the shop’s own official website says explicitly the opposite — only certain flavors — so we downgraded it out of caution. Ask which flavors are covered, and remember the scoop and the display case are shared.

Our tips on site

  • Say “Sono celiaco” or “Sono celiaca.” In Italy, the disease is very well known and the word triggers real precautions, far more than “senza glutine.”
  • AIC, Associazione Italiana Celiachia, is the Italian national association; its affiliated establishments appear in its own network.
  • Plan for a takeaway meal. None of Lucca’s three dedicated addresses is a restaurant: Glee has no dining room, TAT is a supermarket, the Atelier is a patisserie. The four addresses are also on four different streets.
  • Continuing your trip through Italy? Our guide to gluten-free travel in Italy covers the rest of the country, and dedicated kitchen or gluten-free menu, the difference explains exactly the ice cream shop’s case above.
