Grand Rapids offers a comfortable setup: of the 4 verified addresses, 4 are fully dedicated kitchens, and none carries a flagged risk. Two bakeries, a brunch spot and a fast-food restaurant — all four entirely gluten-free, three of them also vegan. Two are even linked: the brunch spot was founded by the creators of one of the bakeries.
The city in numbers
The two eateries: brunch and fast food
Fika, 1359 Plainfield Avenue Northeast, in the Creston neighborhood, is a fully vegan and gluten-free brunch restaurant, founded by the creators of Rise Authentic Baking Co. Breakfast sandwiches, vegan chicken and waffles, homemade bread: the menu is safe from top to bottom. The 100% vegan and 100% gluten-free status is confirmed by Find Me Gluten Free, Yelp, the official site and local press.
Papa Chops Eatery, 2222 28th Street Southeast, is Grand Rapids’ first fully gluten-free fast-food restaurant, opened in 2022: burgers, sandwiches, poutine and pizzas. The owner is himself celiac and built the brand around food safety — which, for poutine or pizza, changes everything. Confirmed by Find Me Gluten Free, the National Celiac Association, WOODTV.com and the official site.
The two dedicated bakeries
Here you can take anything from the display case without reading a label.
Rise Authentic Baking Co., 1220 Fulton Street West, is a fully gluten-free, vegan and soy-free bakery: pastries, bagels, donuts, cakes and treats, all made from scratch with fresh ingredients. The space is shared with a neighboring café to go with the pastries. Dedicated status confirmed by Find Me Gluten Free, the official site, Yelp (167 reviews) and the specialty blog MI Gluten Free Gal.
Real Good Foods, 1549 Michigan St NE, is a gluten-free, nut-free and dairy-free bakery set inside the Ageless Beauty salon: pastries, donuts and granola made in-house with local products. It only opens on weekends — worth scheduling around. Confirmed by Find Me Gluten Free and by its official Facebook page, which specify a fully dedicated bakery, free of nuts and soy.
Our on-site tips
- Say “I have celiac disease,” not just “gluten-free”: in the United States, the latter often passes for a chosen diet.
- Check the day before heading out for Real Good Foods: it only opens on weekends, and it’s housed inside a beauty salon, not a bakery storefront.
- Two American association landmarks: GIG (Gluten Intolerance Group) and Beyond Celiac. The National Celiac Association is among the sources that confirmed Papa Chops.
- Continuing on through the United States? Our guide to gluten-free travel in the USA covers the rest of the country, and dedicated kitchen vs. gluten-free menu, the difference explains exactly what a dedicated kitchen guarantees.
