Catania is a simple city for a celiac: of the 4 verified addresses in our database, all 4 are fully dedicated. No wheat flour on the premises, anywhere. So there is no “mixed tables” section in this guide, and no precautions to negotiate at the counter. The trade-off: three of the four addresses are bakery-patisseries more than sit-down meals. For a proper table, there is one.
The city in numbers
The bistro where you sit down
Easy, Piazza Carlo Alberto, is a bistro born under the arcades of the square, with a dedicated “senza contaminazione” kitchen: pizza, pinse, pasta and bread entirely gluten-free, takeaway possible. The official site and a series of independent sources — the Sicilian press, specialist directories — all use the wording “100% senza glutine” and describe a contamination-free kitchen. The address and phone number match our listing.
The three counter addresses
Artigiani del Senza Glutine, Corso delle Province, works with nothing but gluten-free products: rustici, pizza al taglio, mini arancini, bread and pastries. The place is appreciated well beyond the celiac public, which is generally a good sign for quality. Four Italian specialist sources agree on its 100% gluten-free status, and none mentions any wheat product on the premises.
Glutine…? NO grazie, Via Nuovalucello, is an entirely gluten-free patisserie-bakery, known for its wide choice: breads, arancini, pizza, lasagne and Sicilian sweets — right down to carnival chiacchiere. Customer reviews describe an experience celiacs consider safe.
Le Bontà Senza Glutine, Via Galermo, works only with gluten-free flours: from bread to pizzas, by way of pastries, fried food and ice cream. The fact that fried food is mentioned matters — in a fully dedicated house, the shared fryer, which normally rules fried food out for celiacs, is no longer a problem. Regulars describe it as an affordable, honest address; three sources confirm it.
Our tips on site
- Say “sono celiaco” or “sono celiaca”. In Catania, the four addresses on this list will not ask you for it — but everywhere else in town, that is the sentence that triggers real precautions.
- AIC, the Italian Celiac Association, is the national reference association; its Alimentazione Fuori Casa network lists establishments trained and inspected throughout the country.
- Plan the journeys. Corso delle Province, Piazza Carlo Alberto, Via Nuovalucello and Via Galermo are four separate points in the city: no single walk strings them together.
- Travelling on beyond Catania? Our guide to gluten-free travel in Italy covers the rest of the country.
