El Calafate is a stopover town on the way to Perito Moreno, and our database counts 4 verified addresses there, 4 of them fully dedicated kitchens. Not a single mixed table, not a single “adapted” menu: a sin-TACC bakery, a Patagonian restaurant, a café-patisserie and a delivery service set up by the mother of a celiac child. It’s a short list, but none of it asks for a compromise.

The sit-down meal: La Zaina

La Zaina Cocina Patagónica, on Gobernador Gregores street, is the only verified restaurant in town — and its menu is entirely gluten-free: house-made ravioli, pasta, lamb and grilled meats, sin-TACC breads. Reviews praise the welcome and the portions. Book ahead: the place fills up fast and there is no equivalent if you’re turned away. The dedicated status is confirmed by Atly and several tourist guides that cite the same address.

Asado and grilled meats are, by themselves, gluten-free — but in a mixed kitchen, it’s the marinades, the breads and the work surface that cause problems. Here, the question doesn’t come up, since nothing that enters the kitchen contains wheat.

Breakfast, snacks and delivery

Delicias sin TACC, near Libertador Avenue, bills itself as a “kitchen by celiacs, for celiacs”: sandwiches, pastries, pizzas and frozen pasta, all gluten-free and free of cross-contamination. Useful for taking food along on an excursion. Two sources agree, including the town’s tourism site.

Veggies Patagónicos - Café & Alfajor, also on Libertador Avenue, is a 100% plant-based and gluten-free café-patisserie, active since 2009: alfajores, cakes and house-made pastries. The official site advertises foods “libres de gluten y lácteos” (free of gluten and dairy); HappyCow and the Facebook page confirm.

Gluten Free-z is not a shop you walk into: it’s an artisan service run by Laura, mother of a celiac daughter, who prepares empanadas, pies and pastries in a strictly gluten-free home and delivers to the town’s hotels. Verified via its official Instagram account. Plan to order ahead: there is no storefront.

Our tips on site

  • Say “Soy celíaco” or “Soy celíaca” (I am celiac), rather than “sin gluten.” In Argentina, the official designation is “sin TACC” — no wheat, oats, barley or rye — and it is well understood everywhere.
  • ACELA, the Asociación Celíaca Argentina, is the country’s reference national association for celiac people.
  • Two addresses are on Libertador Avenue, the main street: Delicias sin TACC and Veggies Patagónicos. La Zaina is on another street, Gobernador Gregores.
  • Continuing your trip? Our guide to gluten-free travel in Argentina covers the rest of the country, and dedicated kitchen vs. gluten-free menu, the difference explains why the four addresses above don’t compare to an “adapted” menu.
