Calgary is the Canadian surprise of our database: 13 verified addresses, 12 of them fully dedicated, in a city we didn’t necessarily expect to shine on this front. Its distinguishing feature? Bakeries dominate — six dedicated addresses, a remarkable number for a city this size — and several founders are themselves affected by celiac disease, which shows in how seriously they take their protocols.

Dedicated tables, from Venezuela to Vietnam

The veteran of the list is Heaven Restaurant Market (4.6★, around 1,000 reviews): opened in 2012 and inspired by Venezuelan cuisine, it serves arepas, empanadas and house-made fries with no trace of wheat on site, alongside a small attached gluten-free grocery store. Expatasia (4.9★, over 900 reviews) is one of the highest-rated addresses in the entire city: this Asian-fusion spot was founded by a father-son duo after the son had to switch to a gluten-free diet — noodles, fried rice and even poutine are all prepared in a fully dedicated kitchen. Downtown, TRE Vietnamese Kitchen (4.8★) trains its staff in celiac protocols so pho and spring rolls can be enjoyed with peace of mind. In Edgemont, Selia Bar pulls off a rare feat: fully gluten-free fish and chips, burgers and onion rings — three dishes most celiacs have written off for years — served by staff known for their grasp of food-safety issues, plus a full wine, cocktail and spirits menu. And for street food, the Mestizo Mexican St Food stall even coats its shrimp in rice flour.

Two fully dedicated pizzerias

A rare find: Calgary has two 100% gluten-free pizzerias. Avatara Pizza bakes its organic pizzas in a stone oven, with much of the menu vegan and meats raised without hormones or antibiotics. The Village Flatbread Co. (4.6★) adds a halal dimension, with vegan and keto options — and a loyal local celiac following.

Six bakeries, from bagels to mochi donuts

This is the city’s real strength, and a telling sign: when a city supports six fully dedicated bakeries, it means the local celiac community is large, demanding and loyal. Miss P’s Gluten Free has run its ovens for nearly twenty years — its bagels and bread are consistently praised. Delissitude, gluten-free and nut-free since 2014, also offers frozen dishes to take home: perogies, pizza crusts, samosas. The Cookie Jar (4.7★) was born from founder Laurie’s celiac diagnosis, and its cookies win everyone over. More recent additions: Misoan Cakes (4.8★), a Korean bakery opened in 2024 whose cheesecakes are said to be indistinguishable from wheat-based versions, and Marsha Sophia (4.8★), a bakery-café opened in 2025 in Kensington by a certified gluten-free nutrition practitioner, designed as a community space. One last treat, with a caveat: Sweet Rice, a rice-flour mochi donut counter that’s naturally gluten-free — though its broader menu (popcorn, snacks) is worth checking item by item, as the establishment isn’t guaranteed to be fully dedicated.

Tips for your visit

  • The phrase to know: “I have celiac disease — is this gluten-free?” Since many addresses on this list were founded by people directly affected, the question is taken seriously.
  • The national association: the Canadian Celiac Association; in Canada, a food labeled “gluten-free” must contain no more than 20 ppm of gluten.
  • Think about your freezer: several of the city’s bakeries offer frozen meals and pizza crusts to take away — handy for an apartment stay or a trip into the Rockies.
