Raleigh is a small city in our database, but a well-oriented one: of the 4 verified addresses, 3 are fully dedicated kitchens, with no wheat flour on the premises. A bakery, a Lebanese bistro and a downtown café-juice bar. The fourth is a mixed kitchen that labels its gluten-free dishes — the only one where questions need asking.

The three dedicated kitchens

JPS Pastry, 2310 Bale Street, is a gluten-free bakery founded by Joe Parker: breads, pastries and sweets, with dairy-free and vegan options too. The bakery describes itself on its official page as the first certified gluten-free bakery in North Carolina; the local Triangle press agrees. We have no registered consumer label for this address, but the dedicated status itself is confirmed by several sources.

Levant Bistro, 7400 Six Forks Road, north of the city, serves Lebanese and Mediterranean cuisine advertised as 100% gluten-free and soy-free, with organic, non-GMO ingredients and house-made pastries. It is the only address on the list where you sit down for a real meal without negotiating anything. The dedicated status is confirmed by the official site — “everything is Gluten Free” — and by the bistro’s Nextdoor and Facebook pages.

Raleigh Raw Cafe & Juice Bar, 7 West Hargett Street, right downtown, runs a menu that is entirely gluten-free, soy-free and refined-sugar-free: cold-pressed juices, avocado toasts, açaí bowls, made fresh each day by a team attentive to intolerances. The official site and the National Celiac Association confirm.

The mixed table

Juicekeys, 5011 Falls of Neuse Road, is a juice bar offering organic smoothies, fresh juices and a selection of dishes marked gluten-free on the menu, including the avocado toast. The kitchen is mixed: cross-contamination is possible, and we have kept the “gluten-free menu” level out of caution, for lack of confirmation of a fully dedicated kitchen. Announce your celiac disease when ordering, and ask whether the work surface and utensils are changed.

Our tips on site

  • Say “I have celiac disease,” not “I’m gluten free.” In the United States, the second phrase is taken as a preference; the first brings out the clean cutting board.
  • The two reference associations are the Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG) and Beyond Celiac. GIG runs the most widespread gluten-free certification in the country; it is the logo to look for in a window.
  • Downtown holds only one address, Raleigh Raw on West Hargett Street. The other three are scattered north and west: plan a trip for each.
  • Continuing across the United States? Our guide to gluten-free travel in the USA covers the rest of the country.
