Milwaukee has 3 verified addresses, and all 3 are fully dedicated kitchens: no wheat flour on the premises, no question to ask. A Venezuelan table certified by the National Celiac Association and two bakeries, in three different areas. The list is short, but with no gray area: not a single mixed kitchen.
The city in numbers
The downtown table
Anytime Arepa, 275 West Wisconsin Avenue, is a fully gluten-free Venezuelan restaurant, certified by the National Celiac Association. Its official website presents itself under the name “Anytime Arepa Gluten Free Kitchen” and confirms both the dedicated status and the third-party certification. The arepa is made from corn, a naturally gluten-free staple — provided the kitchen is too, which it is here. It is the only address in the city where you sit down for a savory meal.
The two bakeries
Blooming Lotus Bakery, 2215 East North Avenue, is a 100% gluten-free bakery, also dairy-free, egg-free and vegan: scones, cinnamon rolls, muffins, cookies. You can pick anything from the display case without reading a label. Find Me Gluten Free lists it as a dedicated listing, confirmed by the official website and by Yelp reviews mentioning the total absence of gluten.
MOR Bakery MKE, 5504 West State Street, is a fully gluten-free bakery-café opened in 2016: bread, scones, brownies and calzones made with naturally gluten-free flours and grains. Find Me Gluten Free lists it as a dedicated bakery; local press (OnMilwaukee) and the shop’s official website confirm it. It is the bread address, the one most missed while traveling.
Our tips on site
- Say “I have celiac disease,” not “gluten free”: in the United States, the latter is very often understood as a dietary preference.
- Only one savory table. Anytime Arepa is the only one of the three where you sit down for dinner; elsewhere in the city, you need to announce your celiac disease when ordering, everywhere.
- Three areas, three separate trips. West Wisconsin Avenue downtown, East North Avenue and West State Street don’t connect on foot.
- In the United States, the reference associations are the Gluten Intolerance Group and Beyond Celiac; the National Celiac Association, which certifies Anytime Arepa, also keeps a directory of establishments. For the rest of the country, our guide to gluten-free travel in the USA.
